Review: 'Monroe Transfer, The & Her Name is Calla'
'An Enclave'

-  Genre: 'Post-Rock' -  Release Date: '29th April 2013'

Our Rating:
With The Monroe Transfer already having provided arrangements and orchestration to a number Her Name is Calla’s releases, as well as touring together there’s a logic to there being a proper collaborative release between Her name is Calla and The Monroe Transfer. Recorded as a largely improvised session in 2010, it’s taken a while to reach the public domain, but this EP more than justifies that logic, combining the best elements of both acts to create a work that amplifies the sum of its parts and releases something quite special.

Both acts have proven their capacity for creating tempestuous dramas on their own releases, and the five untitled (unless you count numbers as titles) pieces here aren’t lacking in intensity. In fact, the repetition of musical motifs and choral vocals that soar to the heavens with a devotional fervour to create cathedrals of sound create an air of elevated spirituality.

‘#4’ is a real standout, building a punishing force that evokes the heavy repetition and bludgeoning power of Swans. Collectively, the five tracks sprawl and meander and build and poke at the listener’s nerves in a gloriously prickly fashion. Epic? Hell yeah!
