Review: 'Pirate Sons'
'233U'

-  Album: 'EP'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'June 2nd, 2013'

Our Rating:
There's always a risk with heavy rock bands that their love for the loud might become more important than their desire to write good music. Any group of mates can pick up a guitar and drum sticks and turn up the volume, but it takes real skill to create something compelling with the amps right up.

In the case of Pirate Sons, there's no doubting that they hold this skill - this EP is a relentless, pounding ball of energy which rarely lets up, but the music doesn't get lost in the noise.

Each song has something to recommend it. Opener 'Dirty, Dirty Rascals' introduces the power chords and rock vocal of the band ably, before 'Foolish' displays some light and shade in the contrast between the verse and chorus. 'The Last Days of Robert Johnson' pounds away with its four on the floor momentum, while closer 'Long Gone' keeps the energy high but contains some clever rhymic switches you won't see coming.

Well worth a look then, Pirate Sons. Roll on the full LP.
