From the country folk of the title track that rolls along nicely to the delicate ‘The Cormorant and the Heron’ it’s evident that Emily Barker’s got an ear for a tune and a knack for delivering it too.
But it’s on the darker, more desperate-sounding tracks like ‘Tuesday’ that Emily really comes into her own, her voice conveying emotion and tension with real conviction.
The gently careening lighter-waving ‘Letters’ and breezy ‘Ghost Narrative’ further reveals her range and versatility.
She elegantly paints some vivid pictures and conjures evocative scenes and states with consummate ease: moreover, she has a good voice that accommodates a range of styles, and she’s got the songs that use it to best effect. And at the end of the day, it’s the songs that count.
