Review: 'Cooper, Mike'
'White Shadows in the South Seas'

-  Album: 'White Shadows in the South Seas' -  Label: 'Room40'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Catalogue No: 'RM454'

Our Rating:
Ah, the sound of birdsong… Mere seconds into Mike Cooper’s latest in a very long line of releases and already I find myself transported somewhere altogether different. Bright sun shines in a clear blue sky filtered through palm fronds as the sea laps gently on a beach of pure, golden sand. Tropical grooves swing in tropical groves… chilled vibes… insects… twangs…. laid-back slide guitar Tribal rhythms, swaying palms and exotic dancing…

The album does have its darker moments, particularly during the second half, such as the warming jet engine squeal of ‘Lung Collapse’ and the ominous tones of ‘The Ordeal’, but ‘Shadows’ is ultimately a soundtrack that’s life-affirming, a point at which contrasts and all shades of life intersect.
