The latest output from Bristol based outfit Reel Me Records, Akasha is actually a production project of founder Kristian Townsend. Bringing together downtempo, chillout sensibilities with ambient electronica, it’s a challenging work that cannot fail to effect.
Heightened by the vocal and poetry of Trinidiadian writer Coreysan (as well as sparse but excellent Cello work from J Rokka, another Reel Me Records artist), the track itself is something of a paradox. It adheres to what you’d expect of an ambient piece, melodically languid and laden with reverb over the vocal. Meanwhile, a strong beat cuts across everything and provides a much needed momentum.
