Review: 'Littlebow'
'Pi Magpie'

-  Album: 'Pi Magpie' -  Label: 'Second Language'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '14th October 2013'-  Catalogue No: 'SL027'

Our Rating:
There’s a jazzy swing with a prog-rock feel (think the flutism of Jethro Tull) to the album’s title track and opener which sets the tone for the album as a whole. Glockenspiels chime in from time to time, as do electronic pianos and tinkly keyboards. Mostly, though, it’s the woodwind that stands to the fore.

There are moments where the experimentalism and the melodies come together quite nicely, as on ‘Wearside Ratcatchers’, which sees discord and delicate instrumentation interweave and collide, but for the most part the album skips along gaily, sunnily and breezily. It’s nice enough, but very much dappled sunlight background music.
