Review: 'SVARTA STUGAN'
'EP2:A Mutation and a Madness'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Post-Rock' -  Release Date: '22nd November 2013'

Our Rating:
The name of this Swedish trio roughly translates as 'Black Lodge'. If this puts you in mind of David Lynch then it's meant to. The band cite Twin Peaks as an influence and for this four-track release they were also inspired by the macabre themes and characters in H.P. Lovecraft's work (the 'Cthulhu Mythos').

They call their sound a combination of 'twee-noise' and post-rock "with nods to old school Swedish death metal"..

Os Sobreviventes soundtracks an imaginary hero as s/he trudges through snow before s/he encounters something more sinister.

Second Attempt features hushed vocals with barely discernable words ("Can't decide between my eyes / wait for you to say what's real"). Both tracks lull you into a fake calm before bursting into life mid way through in time-honoured quiet-loud fashion.

The noisiest tune is Re-Birth with some wild free jazz playing. This sound and fury of trombone, guitars and drums is intended to evoke the conquering of demons.

The disc concludes with Slow Slow Slow, a more structured piece that is like a 5 minute homage to Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

There are some interesting ideas swirling around here although trying to condense such ambitious themes into such a brief time frame means that it comes across as an 18 minute trailer for a larger scale concept album.
