Our Rating:
You learn something every day. I didn't even know there was a word for the earthy scent produced by raindrops falling on dry ground. The etymology of 'Petrichor' is Greek but Harnes Kretzer is German and also probably a good man to play Scrabble with.

His melancholy minimalist piano based compositions all have one word titles. Ripple and Damped continue the watery theme and the sepia-tinted cover image shows boats moored on a broken jetty.

Most of the instrumental pieces are quite short with six of the ten tracks lasting under 3 minutes. Some like the one minute Ephemeral are cut off in their prime just as you might expect them to drift along languorously.

The title tune and a drone piece calledDesultory go over the five minute mark allowing more space for Kretzer to insert field recordings, effects and toy instruments into the mix. These give an organic, spacious flow and greater depth to the sound.

These days, with so many opportunities for distraction, Kretzer's tunes have a delicacy of form and a soothing quality that demand (and reward) careful attention.

The beauty is in its simplicity and it is a perfect album for a wet Sunday afternoon.
