LUDES seem to be young masters of that all-important music biz ingredient: good timing, seeing as they've recently been supporting none-more-cool new boys Franz Ferdinand and have just stepped off a cooler-than-an-Iceland-freezer tour with My Red Cell, Hang On The Box and Future Kings Of Spain.
And now their new double-A single "She Was Just A Girl/ Your Dog Don't Bark" comes along with nigh-on perfect timing again, and a press release speaking of how they "effortlessly blend strains from a panoply of Influences." Hmm.
All of which tries too hard to sell what is certainly a decent enough single, but nothing that really stands legs apart and scowling from the pack. "She Was Just A Girl" is certainly preferable to most of the Transatlantic practitioners nodding towards this kinda stuff (stand up Less Than Jake and countless others) and does spill into a neat, skabilly section before going for the burn. Noisy and perfectly OK, but nothing new.

Actually,"Your Dog Don't Bite," is the better of the two tunes, though it's basically a heavier, South London take on the skiffly, surreal pop The Coral have twisted into all manner of magnificent shapes. But it's got ace blaring harmonica, searing guitars and a blast of an ending, so it gets my vote anyway. So there.
On this evidence, it's hard to see Ludes as a real force, but as they seem to have the connections, it seems preordained they'll grow in popularity next year anyway. Let's see how it's going in six months
