Our Rating:
This is the debut EP from London based producer Iydes. It is four tracks encompassing many facets of contemporary UK electronica. Grime, techno and the obligatory glitch are all thrown about in the mix. It therefore has a quite unsettling feel to it and often just as it gets up and running it seems to deliberately get its foot stuck in a drain cover. Clank clank.

First track What You Got sets the tone well with its seemingly ad hoc arrangement. Machines and samples say hello to each other at the start and then slowly the beat develops til it eventually becomes a permanent fixture. It breaks and then something like a timpani joins the beat for a minute, then we get a long fade on atmos. Call To Reason starts with a long fade the other way and is a far more cohesive affair. It is probably the only track that would get people moving in the club. “We’ve been running on the same spot/need somewhere new to run to”, works well as a vocal hook. Aldkrome II dubs out the intro with some rewind and static and keeps that vibe going throughout whilst introducing some skittering drum patterns. It’s all about the vibe on this one. The EP finishes off with Silhouette which I guess should be the moody one with a title like that and by and large it does maintain a frown throughout.

There are enough different flavours here to keep the punter interested and I salute Iydes for his industry and experimental nature. Less so for his ability to move the dance floor.
