Review: 'Crooked Brothers, The'
'Postcard EP'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '28th April 2014'

Our Rating:
What do we know about Crooked Brothers? We know that Jesse Matas, Darwin Baker and Matt Foster are all songwriters and multi- instrumentalists. We now their songs utilise banjos, mandolins, dobro, guitar and harmonicas, and that the instruments pass between the brothers as they craft a blend of ‘timeless country classic sounds, back porch blues and stomping scrap yard funk’ what has gained the attention of many folk festival and roots music fans.

We now also know ‘There Ain’t No One’ is an upbeat, uplifting harmonica-led blues to-tapper, and it’s got spirit in spadefuls. ‘I Think I Need to be Alone’ is more downbeat and melancholic, and ‘If I Had Known’ carries a different kind of reflection on the vagaries of life. While it’s not exactly to my taste, it’s hard to deny the infectious qualities of their honest and credibly authentic music, that’s played with heart and with obvious skill and dexterity.

But we still don’t know if they’re actually brothers... although I rather suspect not.
