Following Mansun’s collapse, Paul Draper has maintained a suspiciously low profile. Largely forgotten, occasionally the subject of speculation, and having sold off a stack of his guitar pedals on eBay a few years back, it seemed fair to say he was done. But The Achoress – the musical project of London-based multi-instrumentalist Catherine Anne Davies – has managed to drag him out of his (semi)retirement to co-produce this single. It’s pretty good. Davis has a soulful, almost jazzy vocal that swings around a piano-led indie-cabaret pop stomper. Where things go from here for Draper or The Anchoress is of course anyone’s guess, but it would be nice to think that this is the start of something.
