Review: 'Battle Lines'
'Colonies'

-  Label: 'No Sleep Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '15th April 2014'-  Catalogue No: 'NSR114'

Our Rating:
Battles Lines once again show they’re a top-flight singles band and an act who continue to evolve. ‘Colonies’, their latest offering, is a tense yet cinematic affair. The production is crisp, sharp and stark, the drums cutting through the smooth sheen that overlays the emotionally dark undercurrents.

A blast of FX-laden guitars burst, before the percussive assault picks up. On the one hand, it’s reminiscent of ‘Disintegration’ era Cure with a rich, shoegazey guitar wash; on the other, it carries altogether more serrated edges, and Carly’s refrain of ‘you mean nothing to me, nothing,’ isn’t indicative of a woman wallowing in self-pity, but one who’s taking back control.

Flipside ‘Push’ is a slow-burner that builds as Carly’s vocal soars upwards as she chokes on her emotions above a steely backdrop.

Engaging, atmospheric and oozing quality, it’s everything you’d want from a single and everything we’ve come to expect from Battle Lines.
