I’m always suspicious of artists who make random spellings of words as their moniker. It’s not cool or hip, it’s just plain fucking stupid. And so, Trwbador – a Welsh folk ensemble? Actually, in fairness, that’s pretty close: they’re a Welsh-based duo whose members are Welsh and Dutch by origin, and their niche is ‘Elekctro-Folk-Rave’ tunes with lyrics in English and Welsh.
Sadly, ‘Breakthrough’ really doesn’t demonstrate this especially well, not least of all on account of the dominance of guest contributor ESSA (who formerly went under the moniker Youngun). Consequently, ‘Breakthrough’ is an example of the worst kind of indie / shitcore rap crossover nonsense going.
Musically, it’s meh: mellow and folky with hip-hop beats, and that in itself is ok, and Angharad Van Rijswijk’s vocals are bewitching, but the rapped lyrics, to be blunt, are gash. ‘If your heads’s in the clouds, even if you’re searching for angels / You’d best look around, because tripping on the kerb could be painful,’ ESSA cautions sagely. And rhyming ‘melancholoholic’ with ‘tonic’ is, er, chronic. Or, to put it another way, it’s beyond reproach and makes the chances of this single marking an actual breakthrough for Trwbador unlikely.
