When this raggle-taggle bunch of weirdos (I’m not entirely convinced that ‘sexy’ is the right adjective) say ‘carnival punk’, they mean it. Think, I dunno, Dexy’s Midnight Runners crossed with Dropkick Murphys and a fat brass section. It’s not a good sound necessarily, but evidently has a broad appeal. Give people enough booze and they go mental for lively folk tunes with a frisky fiddle. And that’s precisely what they do (musically, at least: listeners will have to provide their own booze).
‘Tequila Song’ is a rowdy oompah ska-folk knees-up jig that paints a delirious, puke-spattered scene of hedonistic pleasure. ‘Raggle Taggle’ is a typical uptempo folky roustabout that evokes gypsies, nomads and outlaws, the kind of mythical free spirits that exist only in folk songs. Ultimately, much of ‘Kill the Beast’ relies on stereotype and cliché – not especially weird, and as sexy as being passed out in a pool of Guinness and tequila puke.
