Håkon Stene may be a percussionist by trade, but there’s very little percussion to be heard on ‘Lush Laments for Lazy Mammal’, which features contributions from Heloísa Amaral (piano), Hans Kristian Kjos Sørensen (cimbalom), Tanja Orning (cello) and Christian Wallumrod (piano).And yes, I had to look up what a cimbalom was.
The album’s nine tracks, which span the best part of an hour, are sparse in their arrangements and focus on soft, gentle tones, elongated hums and string-drawn drones, and single chimes that hang long in the air to a slow decay. Not exactly dynamic, but mellow.
