Recorded as an improvised piece with no additional mixing, edits or effects, the EP’s premise is to explore the collaborating artists’ obsession with the number 17. Costanza is perhaps best known for providing vocals to a number of tracks by Tricky, but the feel here is very different.
‘Bushwick17’ – so titled in context of the track’s 17-minute duration – is a broodingly melancholic string drone (the sound of an electric guitar placed in front of a fan) over which shimmering chords delicately cascade, hums of cello sweep and incidental bursts of thunderous percussion explode. Distant vocals cry out like a child trapped in a cave. The atmosphere is dark and builds in intensity as the track progresses, building to a crescendo before tapering away to silence.
