Review: 'MOSKUS'
'Mestertyven'

-  Label: 'Hubro Records'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: 'May 2014'-  Catalogue No: 'HUBROCD2535'

Our Rating:
In just half an hour this Norwegian piano trio serve up fragments of various moods - from playful to serious, from melodic to atonal.

Of the eleven tracks on Mestertyven (Master Thief), all but two last around 3 minutes or less. These are the result of a rigorous trimming down process edited from hours of unrehearsed recordings in a 17th century wooden church.

Moskus are pianist Anja Lauvdal, double bassist Fredrik Kuhr Dietrichson and drummer Hans Hulbækmo.

Lauvdal plays an upright piano rather than the grand piano she used on the trio's debut (Salmesykkel). This makes for a harder, less formal, tonal palette.

For instance, in the opening two tracks Fjesing is a jerky free form piece while the five minutes of Tandem med Sankt Peter positively swings along smoothly.

Overall, it is by turns controlled and unpredictable; fast, furious and enjoyable enough for the 30 minutes to fly by.
