Review: 'VANIISH'
'Memory Work'

-  Album: 'Memory Work' -  Label: 'Metropolis Records'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '23rd June 2014'

Our Rating:
The whole post-punk revival thing may have his a peak with the explosion of Editors and White Lies onto the music scene, but far from showing signs of its force dissipating, new bands drawing inspiration from the dark days of the fag end of the 70s and the dull dawning of the 80s, bands born of despondency at a post-industrial world of high unemployment and uncertain futures, are continuing to emerge at an astounding rate. It’s perhaps not entirely surprising, given the global economy and the culture and society the new generation have inherited from the baby boomers. They got to retire in their 50s having paid off their mortgages and all the rest. The future isn’t nearly so bright for anyone under 40 these days.

The legacy of Joy Division and the first album by New Order, not to mention Cure circa ‘Faith’ and ‘Pornography’ bestows a clear and strong influence on ‘Memory Work’, the debut album by VANIISH. But this is no mere homage to influential post-punk acts: instead, ‘Memory Work’ is an intensely personal set of songs executed with conviction and style. Formed in the wake of the death of singer / guitarist Keven Tecon’s mother, the pervading atmosphere of ‘Memory Work’ every bit as bleak as you’d expect. Yet from this bleakness emerges stark, dark beauty.

Dynamic percussion and solid bass provide the backbone of the sound, around which fractal guitars and glacial synths drift and splinter. It’s gothic, without being goth, sombre without being corny. ‘Memory Work’ is a powerful and compelling album that ought to see VANIISH garner some serious visibility.
