Review: 'MASSY FERGUSON'
'Victory & Ruins'

-  Label: 'Spark & Shine Records'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '23rd June 2014'-  Catalogue No: 'SPRKSIN039'

Our Rating:
This album celebrates rough and ready Alt.Country in the mould of Drive By Truckers or Son Volt.

The four piece from Seattle have a fairly macho sound which is why the brief cameo by country singer Zoe Muth on The Hard Way comes as such a relief.

Aside from this, the songs seem to be composed to please a sweaty barroom audience with Ethan Anderson's boozy growl to the fore.

Hello! is track one and seems tailor made to be a show opener ("good to see you all again") and thereafter it's strident rock most of the way with Apartment Downtown, featuring Barbara Hunter on cello, being a rare example of a more toned down sound.

Massey Ferguson tractors are ideal vehicles for all your farming needs. Massy (minus the 'e') Ferguson the band may not be sophisticated entertainment but can doubtless be counted on to be equally solid and dependable as a live band. On record they're a bit old hat.
