Mellifluous melodies, played on what sounds like a reedy pipe organ that hits sharp spots on the aural receptors make for a somewhat jarring listening experience, as does frantic piping woodwind. The instrument at the core of these odd-sounding freeform compositions is the shô , a traditional Japanese reed instrument.
Delirium and discord dominate amidst a segued work that spans eight parts with a total running time of an hour and seven minutes. Teetering notes, careening back and forth are very much pitched toward the upper end of the tonal spectrum throughout, and the paths taken don’t immediately strike as being nearly as delicate as the album’s title suggests.
