Review: 'BALLET SCHOOL'
'The Dew Lasts An Hour'

-  Label: 'Bella Union Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '25th August 2014'

Our Rating:
"We're not a synth band, we're a guitar band but one that's trying to push the boundaries of the traditional set up" says platinum blonde vocalist Rosie Blair.

This suggests the Berlin-based trio have ambitions towards being something other than just another commercial indie band but there's very little evidence of a radical or experimental slant on their debut release.

Instead, the 12 tracks follow a fairly conventional 80s pop-rock model. On the plus side, they replicate this sound very effectively.

Blair's voice resembles Madonna when she was younger and squeakier with added whoops and coos borrowed from The Cocteau Twins. The backing from Michel Jun Collet on guitar and drummer Louis McGuire is efficient but unimaginative.

Three tracks, namely Ghost, Heartbeat Overdrive and Crush are slicker versions of tracks that appeared on their EP The Boys Again while Cherish is the most immediate of the 'new' songs.

The album title's reference to the transience of youth suggests Ballet School are fully aware that good looks and bouncy pop has a limited shelf life. For the moment at least the photogenic threesome are have huge commercial potential; any track could, and quite possibly will, be hit singles.

It remains to be seen if they look and sound so cool when they are no longer young and beautiful.
