Review: 'Tabloids'
'Tabloids EP'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'August 2014'

Our Rating:
You’d have thought given the recent pounding the tabloid press have taken over their gutter morals that even their readers would want to pretend they didn’t read their low-grade rags packed with reactionary crap penned by semi-literate egomaniacs for less literate bigots. So it seems a little odd that a band who are as musically and lyrically literate as this should chose such a name. By the same token, there are connotations of immediacy and urgency and reportage and James Elllroy so perhaps we should let it pass.

‘Circle’ is taut and dynamic and evokes the spirit of Interpol, early Editors, et al, but also has a convincing early 80s vibe courtesy of some sinewy guitar and a passionate vocal delivery.

If ‘Obsession’ strikes as lacking the same impact, it’s because it combines a somewhat Smithsian jangle with a big but bland stadium chorus and winds up sounding like a White Lies B-side. That doesn’t mean it’s awful by any stretch, and it still packs some energy, it’s just less urgent-sounding and less unique. The New Wave pop stylings of the more reflective ‘Eruptions’ are nicely realised and wrap things up tidily.

That two of the tracks on the EP have had plays on Radio 1, and the band played the BBC introducing stage at this years’ Reading and Leeds Festivals before having any product available is impressive. Maybe it’s a little too early to start frothing at the mouth and pitching bucketloads of hyperbole, but given that they’ve been around but a matter of months, this is a strong debut, and no mistake.
