Review: 'SILVA, SUSANA'
'Words Of Power EP'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Blues' -  Release Date: 'August 2014'

Our Rating:
"Sing words of power, shout the bad feelings away"; that's the affirmative slogan on Susana Silva's website and she is living the dream.

After moving to London from Portugal she worked in coffee shops, slept rough and, above all, sang her heart out on the streets.

Eventually, she was able to afford a decent six string guitar and, choosing to busk on the South Bank rather than endure the indignity of a TV talent show, she gradually built up a name and fan base.

The four songs on this EP are a calling card to reach a wider audience and a pretty impressive one at that. She has a powerful voice suited for raw blues or emo-pop; part Etta James, part Pink.

There's a Fado song Sou Tua Meu Portugal and three English tunes which well express her philosophy of smiling through the hard times and staying true to herself. Thank You encapsulates this most overtly: "live life with no fear -take your time - never stop believing"

Be U has the fullest arrangement with trumpet and drum backing. It's OK But I'm Out reaffirms her uncompromising commitment to the life of a free spirit.

Susana is doing things in her own way and has what it takes.
