Review: 'Twilight Sad, The'
'Last January'

-  Label: 'FatCat'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '16th September 2014'

Our Rating:
Only days after premiering ‘There’s a Girl in the Corner’, The Twilight Sad present the lead single for their upcoming album ‘Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave’ . Once again, it marks a significant shift in style: ‘I Became a Prostitute’ presaged he arrival of the wall-of sound sophomore release ‘Forget the Night Ahead’, while ‘Sick’ was a slow-burner that hinted at the bleak synth-dominated sound that would define ‘No-One Will Ever Know’.

And so it is that ‘Last January’ witnesses something of a return to the wintery gloom of their debut album, although like ‘Sick’ it’s not necessarily an obvious single cut and doesn’t exactly grab the listener by the throat. Yet by the same token, it’s a bold statement that reasserts The Twilight Sad’s singularity: they’re not aiming for the mass market, but are a band who exist to produce emotionally fraught songs that drag the listener into the darker recesses of their minds to reflect on those experiences and states of mind that are the hardest to face.

Their new album is intended as a drawing together of all of their previous phases to now, although on this outing, there’s a delicate folk element and a keener sense of vocal melody than on anything they’ve done before. This being The Twilight Sad of course, it’s an achingly dark piece that finds James Graham sounding lost, adrift in a sea of reverb as he untangles painful events and frustrations before the simmering tension breaks in a glorious burst of noise that’s restrained but at the same time magnificently cathartic.

Tantalising is the word, and I’m by no means the only one on the edge of my seat for the album in October...
