Review: 'Slow Revolt, The'
'All Your Own'

-  Genre: 'Soul' -  Release Date: '20th October 2014'

Our Rating:
According to the press release, South-East London’s Joe Mirza, performing under the alias The Slow Revolt, has unveiled something rare - his own brand of contemporary electronic soul. A contrast against the superficial hyperactivity of online life, The Slow Revolt deals with the emotions that are harder to reveal in public.

The instrumentation is sparse, soft chords that float in and slowly fill out at the bottom end. There’s a smooth beat and Mirza’s vocals are certainly soulful. But electro and soul are poor bedfellows, and a few funky bass runs straight outta 1985 doesn’t make the music any less bland and sterile sounding. And while Mirza’s working the upper reaches of his vocal chords and putting some work in, the reverb and delivery make the impossible to really engage with the lyrical content or feel the emotional depth he’s aiming to convey.

Not revolting, but nothing to set the pulse racing either.
