Review: 'Charlatans, The'
'Talking in Tones'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '20th October 2014'

Our Rating:
Who would have thought in the heyday of baggy that The Charlatans would be one of the few to go not only to survive Britpop but also to go on to enjoy an enduring career? Not only that they would survive the deaths of not one, but two band members, but that they’d move beyond retro nostalgia live shows to release a new album? Ahead of said new album, slated for a 2014 release, they’ve given us ‘Talking In Tones’, which they’re launching with a sold-out (in three minutes) gig at The Garage in London.

The synths and guitars snake around a shuffling beat and layer up. Melding psychedelia to 60s pop and indie, there’s a deeply melancholic edge to the melody of the verse which lingers even as the song blossoms into a rich chorus. It’s one of those songs that draws you in, not with huge hooks or a large bite, but by emotional stealth, making ‘Talking In Tones’ significant of a very a welcome return.
