In the two years since his last release Peter Broderick was struck down by a debilitating illness that forced him to re-evaluate his life.
This process included moving from Berlin to his home state of Oregon and he says the resulting record was inspired by “getting back in touch with my American-ness”.
Thankfully, this EP is the music of recovery rather than sickness and reflects Broderick's gift for turning bitter experience into bright, optimistic songs.
The title track, Colours Of The Night comes in two versions: a joyful Afro-Pop 'Satellite' mix recorded in Switzerland with local musicians and a spacey eight and half minute dub engineered by Greg Haines in Berlin. Each gives musical articulation to the darkness into light metaphor of the album.

Tender ballads Take Me Back and the a capella Love Defines You reflect a genuine sense of warmth and humour. The latter includes the line: "I refuse to see this life without a twinkle in my eye".
It closes with the equally delicate More And More an acoustic song enhanced by Broderick's 'mouth trumpet'.
The EP is effectively a short, but very sweet, six-track trailer for a forthcoming LP scheduled for release in spring 2015.
On this showing the full length album promises to be a real treat.
