Review: 'Gill, Jonny'
'Quietly Quietly (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
Away from his more rock-orientated band work, York’s Jonny Gill spends a lot of time playing delicate and personal acoustic tunes. ‘Quietly Quietly’ sees Gill make great leaps in terms of both musical and lyrical composition, and the six songs here are by far his most assured-sounding yet. But for all that, he’s lost none of his charm, and he’s still drawing on elements of autobiography, observation and introspection.

‘I’m not the same person I used to be,’ he sings at the start of ‘I Swear it’s a Christmas Song, and as is always the case when Jonny sings, you believe it: there’s an unstinting sincerity to both his lyrics and their delivery. And certainly, this feels like progress, and he often comes across as a bruised protagonist, battered by life but eternally optimistic.

Of the songs here, opener ‘Second Hand’ is an obvious standout: a sparsely-arranged acoustic character-based song that follows a waltz-time beat ‘24’ is urgent and picks up the tempo, while Jonny, sounding very Brian Molko, philosophises, ‘and your flame burns on without me’.

Switching to ukelele for ‘A Short History of How I feel at 2am’, the atmosphere becomes even more intimate and finds Gill at his most reflective.
