Our Rating:
“The same week our fowls were stolen, Daphne Moran had her throat cut”. This is the opening line from The Scarecrow, a novel by Ronald Hugh Morrieson. He was from Taranaki, New Zealand and he died at fifty having drunk too much liquor. He has possibly been read by more people outside of NZ than within, which is not saying an awful lot, and the only building left to remember him by got pulled down and turned into a burger joint.

The reason I mention this is because Ronald wrote gothic novels and Aldous writes gothic folk songs. If she hasn’t read his novels then she might enjoy them very much. This does raise a wider question of whether or not New Zealand is, in fact, a gothic country? I think the answer might well be yes. The other reason for this digression is of course, much more prosaic. This album is so bloody good I don’t know what to say about it.

“Lord show me my daughter. Show me her before she burns”. (Stop Your Tears). “I am bleeding in the river”. (Hunter) “Behind this house there is a boy. I hear him cry at night”. (Titus Groan) “When I cannot find the silver designed to take your life. And the shadows are too deep to find the light”. (Small Bones Of Courage).

I am curious about her kind of Irish accent? Is this her own or important enough to be imported/created for the stories she tells? All good no dramas, it certainly adds to the drama. I am also curious about her being on Lyttleton Records and Spunk Records at the same time? Might be about to blow this one? Are some of these traditional arrangements or simply future classics? Listen? What’s that sound? Could it be? Yes I think it is. The sound of Nick Cave blubbing. Why is he blubbing? Because he heard Aldous Harding and he messed his pants. Another question. What is the sound of one man clapping?
