Metallic scraping drones scratch and warp over throbbing synth bass tones and motorik percussion. For the most part, the album bumps along nicely, building hypnotic soundscapes that eddy and sweep, flutter and wobble, and at its best, ‘500m’ creates trance-like vibes and some absorbing atmospherics.
‘Parfum’ brings a shuddering, murky drone underpinned by a classic 4/4 vintage Roland drum sound. Elsewhere, as on ‘Mandarine’, swampy sounds bubble and swirl. The more overtly experimental tracks are every bit as entrancing, making for an album that’s at once compelling and cohesive, while at the same time hard to pin down.
