Review: 'Matinée'
'These Days'

-  Album: 'These Days' -  Label: 'Neon Tetra Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'November 2014'

Our Rating:
Named after the Franz Ferdinand track ‘Darkness of the Matinée’, London four-piece indie art rock poseurs Matinée have gained exposure supporting the likes of Mystery Jets, The Futureheads and British Sea power.

Tracks like ‘Said I’ reveal their debt to the band to which they owe their name, and this debut long-player is packed with electro-indie tunes reminiscent of The Bravery and The Cinematics while equally nodding to classic 80s acts. And while they’re on a referencing trip, ‘White Lies’ does sound like a slightly more upbeat tribute to the neo-new wave miserablists. They have a knack for a big chorus, too, and although it’s all too easy to draw comparisons, there’s still enough here that’s sufficiently individual to distinguish Matinée from their peers.
