Review: 'Dreaming, The'
'Alone'

-  Label: 'Metropolis Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '11th November 2014'

Our Rating:
There was a time, back in the 90s, when a tidal wave of post-NIN bands crashed onto the scene making abrasive, hard-edged music that amalgamated elements of techno and rock in a ways that was exciting and new. Stabbing Westward were one of the standout acts, but like the majority, they disappeared after a time, and called it a day in 2002 after four albums.

12 years on and two of the band’s founder members, Christopher Hall (lead singer) and Walter Flakus (keyboards, programming) re-emerge as The Dreaming. ‘Alone’ picks up where their previous incarnation left off: crashing industrial percussion dominates, closely followed by a dense bass that lays down a meaty industrial groove on the atmospheric verses. The melodic vocals provide a nice counter to the blistering mesh of guitars on a big, big chorus.

It’s extremely good, both within its genre and as a single, but being so heavily reminiscent of NIN’s ‘Closer’ and ‘Hey Man Nice Shot’ by Filter, how far they’ll go this time around is debatable simply because their audience may have moved on...
