Review: 'COYLE, DAN'
'Perfect Word, Perfect Beat EP'

-  Label: 'Self released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '21st October 2014'

Our Rating:
Singer-songwriter Dan Coyle may be based in New York but he is clearly a wandering soul driven by a 'seize the day' philosophy.

This restless sense of urgency is most successfully realised in the opening track, God I Miss You; a lively banjo-driven tune with some neat scat-singing to finish off.

For what is Coyle's seventh release. he teams up with San Francisco artist/producer Scott Mickelson. Although the duo's work is labelled as 'The Dan Coyle Wonder Thrills' it still feels like a solo record albeit with some playful collaborative touches like the doo-wop backing on The Difference.

The most personal of the six songs is Hey There Mama which is built around a spoken word discourse on how the sudden and unexpected death of Coyle's father led to a "drastic change of lifestyle". This tragic event gave him added impetus to make the most of the little time we have and fired his resolution to hit the road for a tour of Europe with guitar, backpack and $1,000 in his pocket.

The songs are fresh and direct with unfussy arrangements to match. The result is the EP with an upbeat mood wholly in keeping with the implicit message that, when it comes to living your dreams, the time is now.
