Our Rating:
Those who’ve heard of Dreyblatt may be aware that he; considered to be the most ‘rock-orientated’ of American minimalists. Whether you’re familiar with him or his work or not, ‘Choice’ is probably a good summary of his career, gathering as it does selected live performances from 1977 to 2007. Dreyblatt’s ‘rock’ leanings are all relative, of course. Don’t expect any screaming guitar solos here. Or guitars, for that matter, lead, rhythm or bass. Or drums, either.

Rapidly picked harptones overlay long, sonorous grinding drones that swell and flow, the tonality shifting and drifting, the mood altering instantaneously. ‘Regal Sustain’ sounds a little like a bagpipe, swelling polytones resonate and scrape at the senses, but the strikes and other various ways of yielding sound from instruments are equally jarring and jangle the cranium. Suffice to say ‘Organ Music for 16 Hands’ is quite a sound to behold.

Slight changes in pitch and intensity have, at times, a significant impact on a single note or chord, flickering and fluttering, delicate yet savage in their repetition, while elsewhere unearthly shrieks, ghostly howls and high-pitched hums pierce the ears.
