The cumbersome and negatively-slanted title is classic and vintage Twilight Sad, and the latest cut to be lifted from their fourth album encapsulates the band’s bleak perspective to magnificent effect. Few, if any, other bands are capable of producing songs of such emotional resonance. There’s no one single element that renders their work so moving: it’s all about the sum exceeding the parts.
With a driving bass underpinning the surging guitars and James Graham’s vocals, bathed in so much reverb as to be on the brink of drowning, this is an obvious single choice (which doesn’t necessarily make it the best track on the album). It’s also potentially the defining moment in their career, which sees them reach the mass audience they’ve always so richly deserved, but without selling out.
