Review: 'ACKROYD, POPPY'
'Feathers'

-  Label: 'Denovali'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '14th November 2014'

Our Rating:
Poppy Ackroyd's sophomore solo release contains 40 minutes of delicate and melodic sumptuousness. The album title was inspired by Emily Dickinson's poem 'Hope is the thing with feathers'.

All 8 instrumental tracks have one word titles that suggest a minimalist working philosophy yet these vibrant tunes flutter and float to offer much more than just discrete background music.

Ackroyd, who also plays live with the Edinburgh-based Hidden Orchestra, is classical trained on violin and piano and while these two instruments are to the fore, they are supplemented by other acoustic keyboards and guest cellist Su-a-Lee. This gives a slightly fuller sound than on her debut album, Escapement (2012).

The title track is the perfect example of the record's ethereal grace and beauty but field recordings also help keep the music grounded. For instance; we hear pebbles kissed by the ocean on Brighton beach in Birdwoman and chiming wall clocks in Timeless.

The atmospheres are both cinematic and transporting, creating just the kind of wind down record you'll need after a hard day on the planet.
