Review: 'Sankt Otten'
'Engtanz Depression'

-  Album: 'Engtanz Depression' -  Label: 'Denovali'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '27th February 2015'

Our Rating:
Emerging from the more laid-back, spaced-out and mellow end of the Krautrock spectrum, the eighth album by German duo Sankt Otten is a sedate – and sedated – trip built around soft-focus synths that bubble and waft over understated rhythms that flicker with jazz inflections.

Chubby, dubby bass grooves abound and provide substance to the sound. 80s electronica and hip-hop elements drive the sparsely-arranged yet sonically dense ‘Wo es immer regnet’. The 12-minute behemoth that is ‘Sing die Apokalypse’ is the album’s clear standout, but it’s the overall shape and feel of the album that really counts. There’s a lightness and spaciousness to the spiralling soundforms that renders the experience of listening to the album far from depressing – and if anything, it’s rather uplifting and relaxing.
