Review: 'Witchrider'
'Unmountable Stairs'

-  Album: 'Unmountable Stairs' -  Label: 'Fuzzorama Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '3rd November 2014'

Our Rating:
I may have scoffed at the album’s rather daft album title, but I sure as hell stopped on hitting the ‘play’ button. With a bass that positively rips the speaker cones open, OCD announces the arrival of Witchrider in no uncertain terms: with the thumping riffage and drawling vocal melodies of QOTSA (‘Black’ is smack in the vein of the ‘Songs for the Deaf’ sound), and when it comes to low-slung, manic stoner rock, they show they’ve got the balls and the tunes.

Single cut ‘I’m Outta Breath’ cocks a nod to classic 70s rock while a raucous fuzzed out lead guitar howls all over the gritty bassline and there’s no shortage of chunky riff-driven swagger to the driven fury of ‘Far From You’ or the grubby afterburn of ‘The Cabin’.

The lyrics are oblique and in parts outright strange: try ‘Everyday I feel like / A big feather ball / Parachutes not needed / I’m up for the fall’ for size.

The title track blends hard rock and heavy grunge in a cauldron of Sabbath-esque mysticism that neatly paves the way for the final brace of riff-centric belters, ‘Witch Hunt’ and ‘Styx’ which power the album to its close. The former boasts a strong groove, while the latter comes across as unexpectedly britpoppy and jaunty. It makes a change from the usual 10-minute workout you find on albums by bands of this ilk, and makes for a punchy finale to a heavy-hitting rock beast of a record.
