Now this is is certainly different. Frode Haltli is a Norwegian accordion player who manages to fuse jazz, classical and experimental music and is probably one of the greatest living exponents of this genre. With 'Vagabonde Blu', his latest album, you get three pieces of avant guarde classical/jazz music for accordion, by three different composers, which was recorded live in concert in Oslo in 2009.
So far, so good. One cannot fault the musicianship or the sound quality of this CD. Why then does this only receive six stars? Basically because this genre is one that will never translate to mass appeal in the UK. This is a composition that will never move a dancefloor, or provoke intelligent discussion except in the most select of circles.

Indeed to these untrained ears, this was very reminiscent of one of those 1970s BBC Radiophonic Workshops albums – a disparate collections of oblique sounds and mood music to suit the home movie of your choice.
Ultimately whilst there was nothing bad about this work, I feel it is diverting but will certainly not gain mass acceptance with people today.
