Review: 'Emmy the Great'
'S'

-  Label: 'Bella Union'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '26th January 2015'

Our Rating:
So, the thematic premise of this EP, the thread that connects the four songs, is that their titles all begin with the letter S. Hardly a great conceptual conceit, it’s true, but when something as delicately soft-focus and sonically enveloping as ‘Swimming Pool’ ripples sublimely from the speakers, who cares?

Submerged beats pulse softly beneath the dainty pop – and the occasional crashing wave – of ‘Social Halo’. The swelling layers don’t detract from Moss’ clear vocals, which seem equally at home on the overtly electro ‘Solar Panels’. With piping synths and a distinct grove that lean on mainstream dance tropes, it’s a departure that could well see her reach a new audience.

‘Somerset’ – a reference to author Somerset Maugham – is altogether more stripped back and simple as she pleads ‘please don’t get over me’ to the fade. Unexpectedly diverse, it’s likely to divide her existing fans. The fact is, it’s good, but not great.
