Our Rating:
Oh, no, please. ‘The Amplifires’? The name – it’s not even a pun – makes me die a little inside. It’s the kind of naffness that passes as ‘wordplay’ that steers me toward the inevitable conclusion that we’re all doomed. It’s not an example of language ‘evolving’: it’s evidence in support of the theory that as a species, we’re on our way back to the swamps.

They’re a female fronted punk band, and their singer, I hear, has been compared variously to Sandy Denny, Janis Joplin and Grace Slick. That’s because many reviewers have cloth ears and are afraid to say when something isn’t very good. She does that amateur ‘big’ voice thing over a pedestrian, four-chord thud.

Life is indeed a gamble, and my advice is that if the best The Amplifires have got to offer is this bog-standard 80s pub rock, then they should quit rather than double.
