Billy Rowan’s musical route has been an unusual one: starting out as a DJ and MC on the D’n’B circuit, he subsequently ditched the decks in favour of a guitar. His singer-songwriter act has since evolved to a five-piece ska-tinged indie band.
On the evidence of this release, it was a pretty good move. ‘Boyfriend’ is a neatly told tale of nightclub encounters, being led astray and meeting all the wrong women. It’s well executed, and slots into the jaunty uptempo reggae groove that’s catchy without being Bruno Mars.
The five additional remixes may seem a shade excessive, but they’re reasonably varied and demonstrate Undercover Hippy’s versatility and consequently his / their potential to appeal to a wide-ranging audience.
