It may have been out a while, but the latest album by Dublin trio Women’s Christmas only recently landed on my desk. And I’m rather pleased it has. The premise behind the band, who formed in June 2013, was supposedly to capitalise on The Replacements reunion and possible accompanying wave of nostalgia for scrappy out-dated boozy alt-rock.
This, their debut LP, contains 12 tracks, each one a piquant piece of indie-pop pie. Lively and bouncy, it’s far from overproduced but without being lo-fi. The guitars are by turn jangly, choppy and driving, and the C86 leanings are matched by a solid, post-punk energy.
‘Too Rich For Our Blood’ is unpretentious, old-school and very good fun.
