Our Rating:
A fair few notable tastemakers have already been frothing over these guys, with 6Music declaring that ‘A Billion Lions are a band from the Leeds/Bradford area. However they sound like a band from the USA.’ They’re half right, in that they have that assurance and eclecticism generally associated with the Stateside music scene. However, anyone familiar with the eye-popping musical melting pot that is the Leeds / Bradford conurbation will already know that the UK is constantly throwing out bands who sound as though they’re from another continent, if not another world.

Despite its rather parochial-sounding title, ‘Torquay’ fizzes with choppy guitar and bursts with attitude, starting out suggesting Pavement and breaking into a huge, energetic chorus that driving and hints at grunge dynamics, but without losing any of its radio-friendly accessibility. It’s certainly a promising start that suggests A Billion Lions is a name to keep an ear out for.
