Review: 'MAGGIE & LUCY LYRICAL'
'Songs That Traitors Sing (EP)'

-  Label: 'Grass Roots'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '16th December 2014'

Our Rating:
This is just great, a debut four track E.P. that effectively manages to balance both politics and humour in equal measure.

Maggie Swampwino and Lucy Lyrical, using bouzouki and ukulele, have managed to construct something brilliant that will appeal to most people on the club circuit, and equally to discerning folkies, punks and assorted anarchists.

Opening with the magnificently titled 'Beer Goggles (I'm Just Too sober To Love You)', which musically romps along, the girls go straight for the jugular when it comes to the lyrics: - “Her hen night dress a size too small, he danced on stage with a glitter ball/ His g-string promised a bigger story/
Next day over a sweet latte, her lust turned into pure dismay,
To find out her Adonis was a Tory”.

With this Maggie and Lucy start on a high point and just don't look back, following this up with two political songs with a twist, 'Tender Militancies' and 'In The Days When We Were Radicals', which is based on a poem by Edward Polin. Both of these have a witty turn of phrase and will bring a nostalgic smile to ex-Socialist Workers Party members (like myself).

The girls finish on an all time high with bluesy 'Sleazy Peazy' the story of a middle-aged something's attempts to ignite the flames of passion in their other half, heavy on the innuendo: - “I wanna play you like a game of Cluedo/ Keep you guessing as you beg for more/ Polish your candlestick in the library/ Take your lead pipe on the kitchen floor”.

Overall, this was an extremely enjoyable listen which had me laughing out loud at times, thoroughly refreshing stuff.

It's available from: Maggie & Lucy Lyrical at Big Cartel for the bargain price of just £3.00, you can't go wrong. Enjoy!!
