Review: 'Bearfoot Beware'
'World Owes You Nowt'

Our Rating:
Recent news reports suggest that Leeds has seen a worry trend of night clubbers injecting Ecstasy directly into their mouths in a practice known as ‘E by Gum’. This pun-based gag may or may not be the inspiration for the song of the same title here, but as ‘World Owes You Nowt’ suggests, the debut album from Leeds art-rock noiseniks Bearfoot Beware is brimming with northern attitude and obtuse humour.

‘Thick Black Warpaint’ is a jolting smash of noise that calls to mind Fugazi above any other band, but also with a vague twist of Jane’s Addiction, only with substantially more balls. An infinite bass run provides the spine for this shaking groove that explodes into a hollering tumult at the most unexpected of moments. Yes, Bearfoot Beware are masters of the mathy doodle and the unconventional structure.

‘tRad Rr BarRfight’ is a right ruckus, the choppy Gang of Four guitar line rupturing into a frentetic doodle that comes on like Prog Rock on steroids and as performed by Dillinger Escape Plan. If the hectic guitars of ‘Mumzee’ sounds like ‘Bizarro’ era Wedding Present (nowt wrong with following the lead of one of Leeds’ most seminal indie bands), then the stuttering percussion and hollered / yelped vocals sound like an aural explosion.

Don’t expect any predictable verse-chorus-verse pop-by-numbers here. But if inventive noise and off-kilter melodies float your boat, then step right up because Bearfoot Beware have got it nailed.
