Review: 'BRODERICK, PETER'
'Colours Of The Night'

-  Label: 'Bella Union Records'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '27th April 2015'

Our Rating:
Peter Broderick has had health problems of late, apparently brought on by stress and overwork. He relieves the pressure of recording for this latest album by recruiting a group of Swiss musicians from Lucerne.

The result is a mostly relaxed and joyful record in which he steadfastly refuses to dwell too long on the serious stuff. The Graceland vibe of the title track is a case in point celebrating how "all colors of the night turn every darkness turn into light".

Get On With Your Life deals with his hospital treatment (a needle in the spine, mobility problems) but there's a determination not to be weighed down by negativity.

Despite all this bravado there are hints of the doubts and moments of weakness he has endured. If I Sinned is a prayer for forgiveness and there is an air of weariness about Our Best. On top of this, the cheeriness sounds a little forced on One Way.

Broderick's strength is his mellow voice which tends to suit quieter, more reflective material. It is perfect on Red Earth the gentle acoustic ballad which opens the record and makes More And More, with images of love swelling to bursting point, the album's most poignant song.

For all his admirable resilience, the best songs are those where he sounds most vulnerable.
