Review: 'Klone'
'Here Comes the Sun'

-  Album: 'Here Comes the Sun' -  Label: 'Pelagic Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '27th April 2015'

Our Rating:
Over the course of 12 years and five albums, the French band have gradually evolved from their metal roots toward a more ethereal rock – something the press release suggests is ‘vintage but modern, delivered by heavy riffs, delay-soaked guitar-reverie and soft vocal melodies’.

So make no mistake, this isn’t some breezy, Beatles-inspired pop jaunt. No, this is an expansive work which emphasises Klone’s evermore prominent progressive traits.

Titles like ‘Immersion’, ‘Fog’ and ‘Nebulous’ provide a fair indication of the ambitious and layered sounds that dominate this album, which shows how Klone have mastered the balance between heavy, churning guitars and emotive melody. Looping piano motifs and some accomplished, accented drumming provide essential texture and contrast.

It’s hard not to reference acts like Oceansize, Porcupine Tree and Anathema when considering where this album sits, and it’s equally hard to fault the considered production, which is crisp, clean and balanced.

It does, however, mean that while ‘Here Comes the Sun’ isn’t without its moments and is nothing short of outstanding in technical terms, it does feel a bit safe and lacking in real drama. Considered, thoughtful, mature and immaculately realised it is, most definitely, but none of the measured builds culminate in fireworks, and ultimately, a lack of excitement leaves the album wanting.
