Review: 'Riptide Movement, The'
'Getting Through'

-  Album: 'Getting Through' -  Label: 'Caroline / Universal'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '1st June 2015'

Our Rating:
They’ve already gone gold in their native Ireland, and having recently ventured into England with shows in London and slots at the prestigious Live at Leeds festival, sonic posterboys for Discover Ireland, The Riptide Movement, are looking to take the rest of the UK by storm.

This, their third album (but the first to be released outside album, making it their international debut), is brimming with lively, spirited indie rock tunes with chantalong choruses and, er, an occasional big brass section. There are hints of Pavement’s poppier moments, but then equally there are liberal dashes of a host of other alt-rock acts, not least of all Kings of Leon.

They describe it as the kind of ‘rabble-rousing, blue-collar rock ’n ’roll that should see them become the Emerald Isle’s answer to The Gaslight Anthem, Augustines and Frank Turner’. While it’s debatable whether we need another Gaslight Anthem or Frank Turner, there’s no disputing the band’s passion and energy, or their capacity for big old roustabout anthems.

With its boisterous delivery and summery vibe, it’s easy enough to discern why ‘All Works Out’ was selected as the album’s lead single although it’s not the strongest track on the album it’s easy to picture a field full of boozy festival-goers bouncing along and bawling out the infuriatingly catchy chorus.

This does mean that while there’s every chance ‘Getting Through’ will see The Riptide Movement hit the bigtime, they’re going to be one of those band who prove spectacularly divisive. Personally, while I can’t help but admire their songsmithery and applaud their energy, with any significant exposure they’re going to get on my tits pretty quickly.
